22nd of October, 2013 in the middle of harvest season Al'Ard Palestinian Agri-Products has organized olive picking event. The olive picking took place in the Jeet village, near the settlement Gilaad in the area C.
Aim of this event was to support the farmers, whose olive trees and land has been confiscated under pretext of being in security zone for settlements based in West Bank (part of the future long awaited Palestinian state).
These Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
We have waited for 2 weeks till the farmers received the permission from the DCO to collect their own olives on their own land. The Israeli DCO (district coordination office) always delays the announcing of the date of olive harvest, what complicates farmers' and their families ability to organize & come for the harvest on their land stolen by settlements. Thus they happen to loose great part of their harvest, what causes them huge financial loss. Therefore it is so important to come on this particular date in numbers.
North-West from Jeet village is an Israeli settlement Qadumim, which is constantly expanding at the expense of the Palestinian neighboring villages. There is also a constant threat of settler violence from both illegal settlements spreading above the villages. The Israeli settlers are repeatedly torching crops and endangering the indigenous Palestinian people. We have documented one of this attacks, which took place on 23.9.2013, please have a look by clicking on this link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
On the day of the event we could see Israeli occupation forces and settlers observing us from the settlement.
Al'Ard representatives together with 19 volunteers took part in olive picking, visit of Sarra village olive press, enjoyed local Dabke group dance show, while having tasty Palestinian Musakhan (chicken with roasted almonds on traditional oven baked bread with yoghurt) and vegetarian mua'janaat (Thyme pizza style oven-baked bread). Both families enjoyed our presence and help in picking. Even though it was just one day event we hope we have contributed at least a tiny bit in alleviating the pain out of the terrible and unfair circumstances that our farmers from Jeet village have to endure.
By the end of the day Al'Ard said goodbye & thank you to the international volunteers present with Al'Ard Palestinian Agri-products gift bags.
